cumberland road, kew

these clients approached us at the Grand Designs Live show in london to replace an old, poorly constructed school gate house with a new four bedroom family home.

being next to a 1970s primary school and within the kew conservation area, our task was to design a new build house that respects the language of 21st century architecture but is still sympathetic to the victorian properties next door. after long debate with the local council, we were finally allowed a modern approach at the back of the house but were asked to mimic the traditional street scene to the front and sides.

apart from the large secluded music room, the rest of the ground floor feels spacious and open, with the kitchen, dining and living areas arranged around the core of the house. upstairs are a further four bedrooms and three bathrooms complete the living accommodation, whilst a separate self-contained flat at lower ground floor level complies with planning regulations within the borough of richmond.
