cantilever house, surrey

a gently sloping, three acre site surrounded by large trees – the dream site for both client and architect. 3s produced the initial design scheme for a new build detached home for a family of six near guildford. our preferred layout presents all bedrooms and bathrooms in an organically shaped half circle nestled into the hillside, with functional areas such as kitchen, utility, wine cellar, gym and games room tucked deep into the hill.

above this nesting place hovers a compact single storey structure with full-height sliding doors and fixed glass panels connected by a large spiral staircase positioned in a two storey void. kitchen, formal dining and living areas enjoy views over the valley with the informal living area directed towards the naturally occurring pond. all rooms have access to a spacious balcony or terrace, and the main building is connected by covered walkway to the separate garage building.

on site heat generation, grey water recycling and photovoltaic panels for electricity will form part of the construction concept. an off-site prefabricated building methodology is in discussion.
