Following our presence on the Grand Design Show 2021 in Birmingham, we have been instructed to design a contemporary 5-bedroom family dwelling within the Calthorpe Estate in Edgbaston replacing an existing bungalow with detached garage. The new home consists of two hipped roof structures forming the first floor level with bedrooms and en-suites connected by a fully glazed upper landing gallery, an open plan kitchen, living and dining area with a separate spice kitchen and laundry room facilities, a boot room with access from the garage, a separate lounge area facing the garden, a spa & sauna area, a home office as well as a generous entrance hallway with a sculptural staircase connecting each floor level. The building will be constructed to airtight Passivhaus standard, in prefabricated construction methodology, renewable energy sources and heat recovery technology. A carbonated timber cladding system to the upper floor and silicate render finish above a brick base will form the primary materials to the external envelope.
