This Grade II listed Georgian house, dating back to 1730, underwent a complete refurbishment and re-planning to restore its original elegance while adapting it for modern family life. Over the centuries the property had been divided and altered many times, disrupting its proportions, and even bricking up the original chimneys. Our design reintroduced Georgian symmetry to the floorplan, creating a sense of balance and flow throughout, while carefully restoring and preserving historic features.
As the house was north-facing, natural light was limited. The sunken side extension was designed to follow the slope of the land, opening the interiors to the garden and bringing in more daylight, while the basement was deepened to accommodate a new cinema room. The loft was converted into a flexible guest suite, which will also serve as a future bedroom for one of the clients’ two daughters.
The clients, a couple with two young girls, sought a home that felt warm, welcoming, and connected to its surroundings. A soft palette, natural materials, and gentle tones were chosen to create a calm, homely atmosphere that celebrates the countryside setting while offering a contemporary family space.
