arterberry road, wimbledon

located a stone’s throw from wimbledon tennis club, this generous detached family home is situated on a plot cut into the hillside. when we first took on the project, the original house had a sense of grandeur, but had been extended with a dark semi-basement structure with low ceiling heights and a poor relationship to the rear garden, as well as a single storey conservatory set within an upper side garden, which was hot in summer months and cold in winter. our proposals reconfigured the ground and basement levels to greatly improve the internal flow and open the house up to the light and aspect of its surrounding gardens and views. we replaced the conservatory and relocated the kitchen and dining area within a modern and glassy extension which opens up to a newly refurbished upper ground floor roof terrace and the principal living space. the basement area was waterproofed, reconfigured and extended further into the rear garden to improve the circulation from the garage and driveway, and to incorporate a new entertainment room and guest bedroom with en suite. The upper terrace includes a slender louvred structure providing shading and a space for external seating and al fresco dining, with glass balustrading and steps leading into the rear garden.
